1.4 Fractions

Quick Notes & Formulae

Essential concepts for solving fraction problems.

Equivalent Fractions
Multiply or divide both numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number. ab=a×cb×c=a÷cb÷c
Mixed ↔ Improper
To convert: Abc=A×c+bc. Reverse: divide numerator by denominator for quotient and remainder.
Adding/Subtracting
Find LCM of denominators. Convert: ab+cd=ad+bcbd. Simplify result.
Multiplying
Multiply numerators and denominators: ab×cd=acbd. Simplify before multiplying if possible.
Dividing
Multiply by reciprocal: ab÷cd=ab×dc=adbc
